Inspiring the Next Generation: The TRA Visits Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School

The Theodore Roosevelt Association was proud to help bring the legacy of our 26th president to life at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Oyster Bay. TRA Executive Director, Chris Cosentino, visited the school library as a guest reader, sharing The Camping Trip that Changed America by Barb Rosenstock—a captivating story about the historic meeting between Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir in Yosemite. That friendship, sparked by a shared love of nature, inspired the creation of the National Park System and remains one of the most enduring chapters of TR’s legacy.

Joining Mr. Cosentino was Dan Bedard, the TRA’s Youth Program Lead, who engaged students with fascinating facts about Theodore Roosevelt’s life and the lasting relevance of his ideals today—from courage and curiosity to conservation and civic responsibility. Together, they led lively discussions that highlighted how Roosevelt’s passion for the natural world and spirit of service continue to inspire new generations.

The students proved to be an enthusiastic and well-prepared audience, tackling Roosevelt trivia with ease and excitement. Many proudly shared that they had visited Sagamore Hill, Roosevelt’s beloved home in nearby Oyster Bay, and his gravesite just beyond it. Discoveries about Theodore Roosevelt’s many pets in the White House and how he gave the Executive Mansion its well-known name added extra fun to the morning.

For the Theodore Roosevelt Association—founded in 1919 to preserve and promote Roosevelt’s ideals and heritage—this visit exemplified our ongoing mission to bring history to life for young people.

It was a morning that truly brought history off the page and into the spirit of the students—just as Theodore Roosevelt would have wanted.
