Teddy Roosevelt Terrier Joins American Kennel Club’s Roster of Recognized Breeds

January 27, 2026 - Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy as an outdoorsman, conservationist, and lover of American heritage gained a new companion this year. The American Kennel Club (AKC) announced that the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier is among new breeds officially recognized for 2026, marking a proud moment for admirers of the 26th president’s enduring influence.

Named in honor of President Roosevelt, whose vigor and spirit embodied the qualities of this hardy breed, the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier has a long history as an all-American working dog. Developed from early terrier stock brought to the United States by European immigrants, the breed became a fixture on farms and homesteads, prized for its energy, intelligence, and tenacity in keeping barns clear of vermin.

“The addition of the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier to the AKC registry is a wonderful tribute to a president who embodied robust energy and love of the outdoors,” said Chris Cosentino, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association. “It’s fitting that a breed known for courage, versatility, and enthusiasm now bears his name in official recognition.”
The designation allows the new breeds to participate in official AKC events, including conformation shows and performance trials.

Compact yet athletic, the Teddy Roosevelt Terrier typically stands between eight and fifteen inches tall and is known for its loyalty and friendliness—traits that harken back to its namesake’s own “strenuous life.” Thought to have connections to the short-legged ratters kept during Roosevelt’s time in the White House, the breed’s inclusion underscores America’s rich canine and cultural heritage.
