Overview


Thank you for your interest in the 2020 Theodore Roosevelt Association Annual Meeting in the Nation's Capital! Due to current Covid-19 restrictions in Washington, DC, the leadership of the TRA and the National War College have determined that the TRA Annual Meeting must now make this 2-day event available via webcast only. Virtual Registration is available online. We appreciate your support and hope to see you virtually at this year's events!


Agenda


Friday

Breakfast at the Hotel for those staying at the Residence Inn Washington/ Capitol Hill Navy Yard.

 

Attendees’ Selected Friday Morning Activity. Attendees may select one of five options:

  1. Tour of Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial at Theodore Roosevelt Island
  2. Tour of the United States Botanic Garden
  3. Visit to the U.S. State Department Museum of Diplomacy
  4. Viewing of selections from the U.S. Library of Congress’ Theodore Roosevelt Collection
  5. Tour of the U.S. Capitol building

 

TRA Symposium, National War College

Buses will leave from Hotel for Fort Leslie J. McNair.

  • Opening Remarks, Congressman French Hill (R-AK) TRA Trustee.
  • Theodore Roosevelt and the Unbalanced Fleet by Dr. Jerry Hendrix.
  • Post-Career Senior Military Officers and the Making of National Security Policy featuring David Ignatius, ADM Michael Mullen, ADM Dennis Blair, Michèle Flournoy and Peter D. Feaver.

Evening Reception at Roosevelt Hall

TRA attendees must enter and leave the base via bus, unless they have military ID.

Saturday

Breakfast at the Hotel for those staying at the Residence Inn Washington/ Capitol Hill Navy Yard.

 

TRA Symposium, National War College

Buses will leave from the Hotel for Fort Leslie J. McNair National War College.

  • Presentation on The Roosevelt Corollary in 2020, by Prof. James Holmes of the Naval War College.
  • Attendees may choose between two panels:
    • Presentation of papers by students at the war college, selected through a competitive process OR
    • Panel on How National Security Strategy is Developed and Implemented by NWC professors Dr. Richard Hooker and Dr. Frank Hoffman
  • Luncheon Presentation on Theodore Roosevelt, the Making of the Modern Military, and the Destiny of a Nation by TRA Book Award winner Professor Matthew Oyos.
  • TRA attendees must enter and leave the base via bus, unless they have military ID.


Saturday Gala Cocktail Reception

The United States Naval Museum at the Washington Navy Yard.

  • TRA Medal of Honor Awardee and Keynote speaker will be The Honorable James N. Mattis, former United States Secretary of Defense; NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Transformation and Commander of U.S. Central Command.
  • The TRA will present our annual award to the Junior Officer of the Year on the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71).
  • The Gala Reception will feature cocktails and substantial hors d'oeuvres and includes a private viewing of the Naval Museum’s exhibits
  • TRA attendees must enter and leave the base via bus, unless they have military ID
